Shadow Stream investigates innovative methods for distributing open content through networked radio, utilizing streaming technologies to create new forms of urban information access and interactivity while employing Pure Data graphical programming. Developed in the 1990s as a collaborative effort, Pure Data programming language allows global musicians to connect on a collaborative platform.

“On this ‘hidden’ Red Radio stream, listeners get to control what they are hearing,” said Natalia Mount, Executive Director, the Red House Arts Center. “The listener becomes the composer.” Basic beats are controlled through a series of directions given by listeners through instant or text messaging. “Let’s say you queue up the Red Radio Shadow Stream on your iChat and you hear a slow beat. You can send a command in to speed it up. Or, you can command it to randomize audio effects or increase the sound distortion. Red Radio Shadow Stream can be controlled by as many people who are sending commands in via text or instant message. Five-hundred people could be sending in commands, and as they come in to Shadow Stream the audio effects are changed in five-hundred different ways.”

Shadow Stream created a segment of interactive content utilizing Puredata. Radio modules were distributed in strategic locations around Sao Paulo, Brazil where installation of more than 16 network / Ethernet radios in and around the conference area allowed conference participants to interact with the radios. At PdCon09, Andrew Mount will be presenting his sample-based sound art work for these radios.

To interact with Red Radio Shadow Stream, the stream was located at http://redhouseartradio.org/rar01.m3u. To participate via text message, one would text redhouseshadow: login to 265-010.
